So I'm at a conference in D.C. taking a class on Firehouse software. I'm in this class learing about the scheduling module ( showing who is on what apparatus for the day, etc...)
The question comes up about a web interface for the scheduler so the guys at other stations, or say on a mobile data terminal can see who's and what apparatus are on duty. Well, the presenter say's that it can't be done and if they did it would be a seperate product that you would have to pay extra for ( IE $5000 -$8000 )
While the guy is explaining why this can't be done, a guy from Bamford CT scoots his Mac Pro over so me and the other guys behind him can see ( he was in the front row ). On the screen is the exact interface we have been talking about that " couldn't be done"! He's running a cold fusion site that picks up the info on the back side of the SQL database.
Needless to say the presenter lost the focus of the class for the next 30 min. or so, as well as most of his "expert" resepectability.
I was one of the less programming literate ppl in the room and I think I knew as much as this guy. So the moral of the story is; never walk into a room full of hackers when you don't know your Sh**.
So once again were going to be paying upwards of $16,000 for a "upgrade" and a years worth of service contracts for an SQL database and a Foxpro front end. Good thing there's only 8000 departments on this software.
>>> Are any of you programming types gettin this? 16k for a database that is already written and freely distributed by the Fedral Gvt.? Let's see some better alternatives boyo's!<<<
